Yesterday I mentioned that a couple of foreign DJs would be behind the decks at Zizek this week. Most of the hoopla seems to be revolving around the appearance of DJ Missill, an up and coming DJ from Paris.
Some of the local press is touting her as "queen of the mashup", probably because last year she released an album/mixtape called Mash-Up. Oddly enough, it appears that Missill's DJ sets do not actually feature a lot of actual mashups, although she does manage to mix and match a wide variety of styles and genres (electro, hip hop, ragga, breaks, baile funk, booty bass, etc.). One could call her a mashup artist in the macro sense of the word, although these days it seems that the majority of the DJs would fit that description.
Questions of her mashup-osity aside, this week local website Ciudad.com ran an international mashup meeting of the minds in the form of a DJ Missill interview conducted by none other than Buenos Aires mashup king Villa Diamante (who definitely spins lots of actual mashups). Apparently Missill got her start in the French hip hop scene as a graffitti artist prior to becoming a DJ.
Examples of her artwork can be seen on DJ Missill's myspace page and official website, both of which also feature streaming versions of her original productions along with sample tracks from some her mixtapes.
DJ Missill will be spinning Wednesday night at Zizek and Thursday evening at the Escenario Dorrego as part of the Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Música (BAFIM).
